The DLD generally asks for three categories of documents: proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport), proof of your Social Security number, and two documents proving Utah residency (such as a utility bill or lease).

The age and what each path requires
What's required of you depends on your age, not just having documents in hand:
- Age 15: eligible to apply for a learner permit after passing the written test
- Ages 15-17: driver education required, permit must be at least 6 months old, and 40 hours of supervised practice before the road test
- Age 18: driver education is still required (you're under 19), with no 6-month hold requirement
- Age 19+: the driver education course is optional; skip it and the permit must be at least 90 days old before the road test
The tests
Beyond documents, three tests stand between you and a license: the written knowledge test (offered in Spanish), a vision test, and the road test with a third-party tester — never the school that trained you.
