- Enroll in driver education — 18 hours of classroom instruction at a commercial or private school (27 at a high school, 30 online), plus 6 hours behind the wheel with a certified instructor. A full teen package with a partner school typically runs $375 to $425 typical.
- Log 40 hours of practice — 40 hours of supervised practice driving with a parent or guardian, 10 of them after dark, before you're eligible for the road test.
- Hold the permit 6 months, if you're 15-17 — Your permit must be at least six months old before you can apply for a license. At 18 or older, there's no hold requirement on this path.
