The Utah 40-hour driving log

10 hours after dark, 40 total, before the road test.

Updated 2026-08-14
A paper logbook and pen on a car's passenger seat in late-afternoon light.

Utah requires every driver under 19 to log 40 hours of supervised practice driving with a parent or guardian before the road test — 10 of those hours after sunset. This isn't optional paperwork; schools and testers can ask to see it.

  1. Start logging from your first supervised drive — Every session with a permit counts, not just formal lessons.
  2. Track day and night hours separately — At least 10 of the 40 hours must be after sunset.
  3. Keep it until the road test — Bring the completed log to your road test appointment; some schools and testers ask to see it.
